A new vision of transport for road users outside the carIn the context of a rapidly changing landscape of urban mobility, in parallel with a concerning number of road fatalities, the European Union has set an ambitious goal: achieve close-to-zero injuries and fatalities on European roads by 2050, the so-called “Vision Zero”! Although the European Union is already a world leader in reducing road traffic deaths and serious injuries for car drivers and passengers, 70% of road fatalities are still affecting Vulnerable Road Users (VRUs), namely those outside the car, such as pedestrians and two-wheelers. Within this context, SOTERIA develops a holistic framework of innovative solutions and services that enable data-driven urban safety intelligence, facilitate safe travelling of Vulnerable Road Users and foster the safe integration of micro-mobility services in complex urban environments. SOTERIA is a co-creation project engaging targeted local communities of road users, infrastructure designers, operators of transport systems and policy makers in the design and validation of urban safety solutions that can reduce injuries and fatalities on European roads. |

| Partner in the Spotlight #2 CORTE, partner of SOTERIA project is working on improving Urban Road Safety "CORTE will help the development of recommendations specifically to inform policymakers and guide them to improve the safety of all road users and especially those who are more vulnerable in these complex and evolving mobility environments. To this end, CORTE will follow and contribute to the work of the SOTERIA living labs from a policy perspective by - suggesting the involvement of key stakeholders, identifying areas that can benefit from improved policies and developing a list of actions. SOTERIA Living Labs are launched across Europe |
SOTERIA Living Labs were launched with the organisation of the first series of stakeholders' #workshops, aiming to hear their voices, collect their ideas and co-create with them new innovative technical solutions that will, accompany road users outside the car and promote their safety on the road. The workshops offered insights into the safety issues faced bydifferent groups of VRU, such as pedestrians, cyclists, motorists, people with disabilities, parents with young children, as well as two-wheeler professionals. In each workshop, we had also the valuable participation of local authorities, municipalities that brought their expertise in the local urban mobility. All data collected during the stakeholders’ workshops are currently being analysed by the SOTERIA partners who are led by team at the University of Western England. Stay tuned for the next steps of the SOTERIA Living Labs in September 2023 to find out about the opportunities to participate in the design of road safety solutions! Have a look at the workshops' highlights! |

| Living Lab #1 - Oxford, UK ✔ On 11 May 2023, the first SOTERIA co-creation workshop took place initiating the Living Lab setup in Oxford, United Kingdom, organised by Oxfordshire County Council. Road safety concerns, as well as ideas for solutions to improve VRUs' well-being were exchanged and recorded to further investigate the local needs and expectations.

Living Lab #2 - Saxony, Germany ✔ On 28 June 2023, the first German SOTERIA workshop was conducted online by Fraunhofer IVI, bringing stakeholders from the Federal State of Saxony together. In total, 16 participating stakeholders, ranging from interested citizens, interest groups, traffic planners, environmental officers, accident prevention and mobility trainers, police-officers and traffic transformation planners attended the workshop. |
| |
| Living Lab #3 - Madrid, Spain ✔On 26 June 2023, our partner Nommon hosted the first workshop of the SOTERIA's Living Lab in Madrid focused on micromobility services and the analytics and prediction tools available to identify and predict dangerous spots for users and public administrations. Representatives of various VRUs groups (cyclists, pedestrians, people with disabilities or reduced mobility...), local authorities and urban transport operators shared their experience and discussed the main road safety problems and how we could improve VRUs’ mobility experience. |
Living Lab #4 - Chania, Greece ✔ On 19 June 2023, SOTERIA's Living Lab #4 held its fist stakeholders' workshop, organised by Cyclopolis, gathering together representatives from various groups such as cyclists, pedestrians, doctors, police, people with disabilities, professionals on two-wheels and elderly road users. The participants gave us their views and ideas on the existing problems on road safety for users outside the car, specifically in Chania, as well as possible solutions for them. |
| |
| Living Lab #4 - Igoumenitsa, Greece ✔ SOTERIA's Living Lab #4 has two operational sites! On 21 June 2023, after the workshop in Chania, the team travelled to Igoumenitsa, in order to host the first stakeholders' workshop there as well. Round table discussions with participants provided us with vital feedback in order to refine the design of SOTERIA's technical solutions. |

| On 9-10 May, 2023, the second General Assembly of all partners of SOTERIA took place in Oxford, UK. The SOTERIA project aims to support and accelerate the achievement of the EU's "Vision Zero" goal for VRUs. Innovative models, tools and services are designed to promote the secure integration of micromobility in complex urban environments. All partners presented their developments and findings of the last few months and future steps were discussed. Our General Assembly concluded with exciting work planned for the next months. Following SOTERIA's internal meeting, the first co-creation workshop with local stakeholders was organised by Oxfordshire County Council and University of the West of England, in order to exchange views and experiences on mobility as VRUs at Oxford.

SOTERIA is proud to be part of a strong cluster of SisterProjects, along with Phoebe and V4SAFETY ! Within the first 9 months of the project our cluster has: - organised a webinar on road safety presenting the technological solutions that the 3 sister projects propose
- co-organised a joint session at ITS European Congress 2023
- started exploring further opportunities for synergies at the technical level, by sharing practices and methodologies adopted for the management of mobility data for all types of road users and in particular #VRUs.
